Robotic watchdog, keeps an eye out while your away

June 1st, 2005

roborior.jpgJapanese robot manufacturer Tmsuk has introduced a robotic “watchdog” that promises to keep an eye on the home-front while your away, with its built-in infra-red sensors and cameras. Roborior might not slide off the tongue as easily as “Robosapien” but former might turn out to be a lot more useful in day to day life. The virtual sentry is capable of calling your cell phone when an intruder trips one of its three infra-red sensors. If you just want to check-in and see if the kids made it home safely, you can view the robots camera feed via the net, and even adjust the cameras point of view remotely. The Roborior goes on sale later this year in Japan, no plans for overseas sales were announced at this time.

Robot doctors, move over Voyager

May 31st, 2005

doctor.jpgKyushu University (Japan) has helped develop a robotic doctor that can check the pulse, blood pressure and other vital data when the patient ‘sits on it’ that sounds a bit odd but ok, the data is then sent to a hospital by wireless local area network. I wonder what this will do to malpractice insurance rates?

All kidding aside these robo-docs are intended for use in areas where human MD’s are unavailable or to bolster those busy with other more critical tasks.

Robotorama

Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, potentially one of the coolest eighties songs I’ve ever heard and a fitting way to say thanks to our robot friends, or thanks to ourselves for building them. This site will be about all things Robot, robotics what have you. If it’s a machine (real or fictional) built to aid or perform automated tasks then its fair game here.

One aspect of robots in particular that I’m interested in is the “home made” or DIY variety, I believe that the kid next door may be as innovative in the field of robotics as some of the mega corporations, and to that end we’re ready to do our part to help. I love to see kids (or “big kids”) get credit for their projects, so be sure to send us any info you have about your robot projects.

Of course we’ll still report on the big name companies and their developments in robotics, I have to believe that Sony, Honda and now Toyota have more advanced models than what’s been shown in public, and likely ones that would put what they have shown us to shame.
